Golda Meir (3 May 1898 – 8 December 1978) was an Israeli politician who served as the fourth prime minister of Israel from 1969 to 1974. She was Israel’s first and only female head of government and the first female head of government in the Middle East.
Born in Ukraine, Golda Meir immigrated to the US and then Palestine, becoming a leader in the Zionist movement and kibbutz life. She signed Israel’s Declaration of Independence and held key government positions, including Foreign Minister. As Prime Minister (1969-1974), she faced both diplomatic triumphs and the devastating Yom Kippur War, leading to her resignation amidst controversy. Though a revered figure for her contributions to Israel, her handling of the war and attitude towards Palestinians remain debated.
