Helen Keller (1880–1968) overcame deafness and blindness to become the first deaf-blind person to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree from Radcliffe College in 1904. Guided by teacher Anne Sullivan, Keller learned to communicate using Braille, tactile sign language, and speech. A prolific author, Keller’s autobiography, “The Story of My Life,” was published in 1903. She became a passionate advocate for disability rights, and women’s suffrage, and co-founded the American Civil Liberties Union in 1920.
