Ramadan is the ninth month of the Islamic lunar calendar and is considered one of the holiest months for Muslims. It is a month of fasting, prayer, reflection, and community for Muslims around the world. The word “Ramadan” is derived from the Arabic root word “ramida” or “ar-ramad,” which means intense scorching heat or dryness.
During Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until sunset, refraining from consuming food, drink, and engaging in certain behaviors. The fasting is not just a physical act but also a time for spiritual reflection, self-discipline, and increased devotion to Allah. The fast is broken each day with a meal called iftar, which is often started with the eating of dates and followed by a larger meal.
In addition to fasting, Muslims engage in increased prayers, recitation of the Quran, acts of charity, and efforts to strengthen their relationship with Allah and their communities. Ramadan concludes with the celebration of Eid al-Fitr, a festive day of thanksgiving and communal prayers, as well as giving to charity.
