Sikhism is a monotheistic religion that originated in the Punjab region of South Asia in the late 15th century. It was founded by Guru Nanak Dev Ji and is based on his teachings, along with those of the nine Sikh Gurus who succeeded him. Sikhism emphasizes the importance of devotion to one God, truthful living, equality, justice, and selfless service.
One God: Sikhs believe in the existence of one God, who is formless, timeless, and omnipresent. They refer to God as “Ik Onkar” or “Waheguru.”
Guru Granth Sahib: The central religious scripture of Sikhism is the Guru Granth Sahib. It is considered the living Guru and contains the teachings and hymns of the Sikh Gurus, as well as compositions by saints from different religious backgrounds.
Equality and Humanity: Sikhism strongly advocates for equality among all human beings, irrespective of their gender, caste, race, or social status. Sikhs believe in the concept of “seva” or selfless service to humanity and strive to treat everyone with respect and compassion.
Five Virtues: Sikhs are encouraged to practice five virtues known as the Five Ks: Kesh (uncut hair), Kangha (a wooden comb), Kara (a steel bracelet), Kachera (cotton undergarments), and Kirpan (a ceremonial sword). These represent the Sikh’s commitment to their faith and serve as a reminder of their identity and values.
Reincarnation and Karma: Sikhism shares the belief in the cycle of birth, death, and rebirth (reincarnation) with other Indian religions. Sikhs believe that one’s actions (karma) in this life will determine their fate in future lives.
Meditation and Simran: Sikhs are encouraged to engage in meditation and remember God through “simran” or repetition of God’s name. This practice helps to connect with the divine and attain spiritual enlightenment.
The primary place of worship for Sikhs is the Gurdwara, meaning “doorway to the Guru.” Gurdwaras house the Guru Granth Sahib and serve as centers for congregational worship, community gatherings, and providing free meals to all visitors (known as langar).
Sikhs practice daily prayers, which include recitation of hymns from the Guru Granth Sahib. They strive to live honest, truthful, and ethical lives while earning a living through honest means. Sikhs also observe important festivals such as Gurpurabs (birth anniversaries of the Sikh Gurus), Vaisakhi (celebrating the formation of the Khalsa), and Diwali (the festival of lights).
Sikhism is a religion that promotes equality, service to others, and devotion to God. It has followers all around the world, and Sikhs contribute to society through various charitable initiatives and community service projects.
